A clear calling
Mary Beth James, LMFT
I'm a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Oregon (License T1352), practicing since 2007. I earned a master's in Counseling Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies in 2008, and in 2025 the HEC-C (Healthcare Ethics Consultant-Certified) credential from the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.
My own experiences of trauma and loss shaped me. Being of service is an important value in my family, and becoming a therapist felt like a clear calling.
Experience
Early in my career I worked with children and families in the Bay Area and Los Angeles County: a parental stress line, assessment and therapy for families in foster care, and Floortime therapy for children on the autism spectrum.
I later supervised services for youth with severe behavioral disturbances, adult outpatient teams serving people with severe mental illness, and forensic programs in Lane County, and served on a Rules Advisory Committee for Oregon's civil commitment rules. I've provided therapy in homes, schools, clinics, hospitals and residential programs.
Home in Oregon
I grew up in Salem, Oregon and Evanston, Illinois, and lived near Philadelphia, in Bellingham, and in Oakland and Los Angeles before returning to Oregon in 2018. I live with my family in Cottage Grove. Music, performing, the natural world, and the joys and challenges of marriage and parenting enrich my life.
